Interior Customization – A Guide

Customizing your ride involves numerous different options.  You can make your ride an extension of your personal sense of style by adding body kits, custom wheels, wing spoilers and much more.  However, changing the exterior of your ride is not the end of your customization.  The interior of your car can be changed out quite easily.  A number of ways exist to do this.  However, if you've never worked on the interior of a car, customizing one can be confusing.  Here are some of the most popular areas with which to start.

Changing Your Seats – Your OEM seats are most likely dull, boring and uncomfortable.  They are definitely not something suited to a custom work of art.  However, you can easily change your seats out and install custom seats.  Numerous different companies offer custom car seats, from rich leather to race-inspired seats.  Racing seats are, perhaps, the most popular way to add a custom look to the interior of your car.  These seats offer you greater comfort because they wrap around your body, holding you securely as you drive.  In addition, most racing seats use a 5-point racing harness for safety, which means you can ditch your OEM seatbelt (don't uninstall it, just tuck it out of sight).

Custom Dash Gauges – The gauges on your dash are one of the most visible parts of the interior (to the driver, at least).  OEM gauges lack style and color.  However, you can add custom gauge faces to your ride and get a great look.  In addition, many gauge kits come with custom dash lights that will add an additional dimension to your interior customization.  To change your dash gauge faces, you will have to remove the gauge cluster.  If this is something with which you are uncomfortable, consider taking your ride to a custom shop to have the gauge faces installed.

Custom Lights – Adding custom lighting is a fantastic way to customize your interior.  LED replacement bulbs are available for dome lights and courtesy lights.  In addition, you can add neon lights to your interior. Bars are available that mount below the seats, on the rear deck and even on your dash.  These can give you a dramatic look and incredible style.  LED strips are also available and provide you with a way to light up very small areas to great effect, such as around your HVAC controls and radio faceplate.

air intake

How does the intake work?  Generally, a cold air intake rests behind the passenger headlight, midway down the engine block. This provides the engine with cold, dense air from outside the engine compartment. Why does the engine need cold, dense air?  Hot air expands inside the engine, providing less oxygen for the fuel to mix with; however, cold air is dense, providing more oxygen at a faster rate.  This equals more combustion, more fuel burnt per stroke and greater power output from the engine. In short, it adds horsepower.  There are other types of intakes available, but a cold air intake is the best option for most tuners, as well as being one of the most affordable ways to increase engine performance.
